How does our Transport Management System actually come about? Who develops the software? How are they selected? How do we make sure they know the transport industry well enough? And what does our remote collaboration look like? Marinus Brink, co-founder and technical director of Filogic, is happy to answer these questions. Time for ‘Behind the scenes with Marinus’!
Do only the best engineers work on the Filogic OpenTMS?
Marinus explains that the selection process is strict. He works together with a Ukrainian company that supplies engineers from top universities. Marinus assesses them on experience and skills, with an emphasis on speaking English and strong communication. ‘A good engineer must be able to do more than just build complex code’ - they also have to be able to explain it well. After selection comes a two-month trial period.
What else do you look for during the selection process?
Marinus works with five developers who work exclusively for Filogic: specialists in software development, testing, security and system administration. They must be able to put themselves in the end user’s shoes in order to write good software. He travels to Ukraine four times a year to maintain a personal bond and to work on code together.
How does remote collaboration work?
The team speaks daily via stand-ups of no more than fifteen minutes, in which they discuss the work and the planning. ‘This scrum approach works very efficiently.’ Marinus sees no problem in working remotely and has been working this way for years.
What makes the development team unique?
The team brings features into production very quickly. Marinus always gives feedback on customer reactions, which motivates the engineers. There is also a rotation policy: engineers stay for a maximum of two years, with staff joining and leaving every six months. This safeguards new ideas and creative visions, and prevents dependence on any single person.
