Digital collaboration for every carrier

The time has finally come: from now on, even small carriers can easily set up a digital connection with large shippers and hauliers to receive and process orders. How did this great development come about? Through close cooperation between a visibility platform and our cloud-based OpenTMS, which we are happy to tell you more about in this article.

Smaller carriers taking on a bigger role

With the growing demand for transport, smaller carriers are taking on an increasingly important role as a flexible layer in distribution processes. But often this only happens on one condition: large clients expect small carriers to be digitally capable. What does this mean? That they can, at the very least, receive planning digitally, communicate digitally with people and vehicles, respond quickly to last-minute changes and forward real-time track-and-trace data. In other words: a considerable expectation that is relatively costly and complex for a small carrier.

Cooperation between OpenTMS and a visibility platform

Digital collaboration should be accessible to every carrier. That is the shared view of us and the visibility platform, which developed a smart system for the supply chain that delivers full transparency between shippers and hauliers. That is why we decided to join forces and build a digital connection to our accessible Transport Management System, the cloud-based OpenTMS. The great thing about this connection is that it allows two completely different target groups to collaborate digitally with ease. The visibility platform works with the large shippers and hauliers, whereas we mainly focus, with our cloud-based OpenTMS, on the SME carrier.

The result

Thanks to the connection, even the very smallest transport company is able to receive orders from a large shipper in the system, but also to enrich them with data and make the requested information about the actual execution of the trip visible in the shipper’s control tower. To make this exchange as easy as possible, we use the Open Trip Model (OTM). This is a standardised, uniform language for the electronic exchange of logistics data.
